Fix bedtime in 40 minutes. — book cover

If any of these sound like tonight

You are the parent I wrote this for.

Somewhere in the house, right now:

  • Bedtime keeps stretching past forty-five minutes — even on the nights you swore would be different.
  • You read more books than you said you would. Every single night.
  • There is always a “one more.” Song. Hug. Water. Pee. Then song again.
  • You are reading this on your phone right now because you needed five minutes alone.

The after picture

This is what forty minutes buys.

Not a perfect kid. Not a silent house. Just this, most nights, by eight o'clock.

The framework

Bedtime breaks in the forty minutes before the bedroom.

Not in the bedroom. Fix the runway, and the room becomes the easiest part of your day.

MIN 0–8

The Drop

Lower the stimulation floor of the whole house.

MIN 8–16

The Signal

One cue, every night, no exceptions.

MIN 16–24

The Body

Physical wind-down. Statements, not questions.

MIN 24–32

The Container

Three books really does mean three books.

MIN 32–40

The Exit

Leave the room without being called back.

And it gets lighter. The first nights, you run all forty minutes deliberately. Once it becomes the house's habit, the routine mostly runs itself — your active part shrinks to about ten.

Built on the same principles pediatric sleep specialists teach — applied to the hour before the bedroom.
Predictability Sensory wind-down Statements, not questions A finite container A calm, repeatable exit

About the author

The mom other moms ask: "wait — how did you fix it?"

I wrote this on the other side of one very long autumn of two-hour bedtimes.

I'm not a sleep consultant or a pediatrician, and this book doesn't pretend otherwise. I'm the parent who rebuilt bedtime the hard way — one removed sentence, one boring signal, one held container at a time — and wrote down exactly what worked.

Mara lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband, two small humans, and a dog with opinions about the bedtime routine. This is her first book.

The honest comparison

Why this works when the other things didn't.

You've probably tried at least two of these. Here's the difference.

What you've tried
Sleep-training programs
$150–300 · built for babies, tears at the door

This isn't sleep training. It fixes the forty minutes before the bedroom, so there's nothing to cry about once you get there.

What you've tried
Parenting courses
$97–297 · six hours of theory

This is scripts, not theory. Word-for-word lines for every "one more," and a worksheet you tape to a cabinet. You run it tonight.

What you've tried
More patience
Free · runs out by Thursday

Patience is a battery. Structure is a system. The framework holds on the nights you have nothing left — that's the whole point of it.

Before you buy.

What ages does this work for?

The sweet spot is ages 2 to 4 — the whole framework works as written.

18 to 24 months: use the lighting, signal, and exit chapters; skip the bargaining scripts. 5 to 6: swap “three books” for whatever container fits — the Container chapter shows how. 7 and up: the runway idea still applies, but the scripts need an older kid's vocabulary. A school-age guide is in the works.

Is this sleep training?

No. No extinction, no cry-it-out. There are short ninety-second waits at the door — if that's a hard no for you, this guide is not your guide.

What format is the guide?

PDF, fifty-one pages. Reads on any device; print the worksheets if you like. One copy covers your household.

What if it doesn't help?

Reply to your purchase receipt within 14 days and say “refund please.” That's it. No forms. No “what didn't work for you” questionnaire. Just the refund.
